"8 March - We Want to Live" March
The feminist community in Azerbaijan has announced the next march in honour of International Women's Day, which falls on March 8.
In February of this year alone, news of the murder of 11 women was published in the media. In addition to these reports of murder, women are continuously subjected to various forms of violence by the patriarchy. According to media reports, 9 women were subjected to physical violence and 8 women were targeted for murder attempts in February. Many of these incidents of violence took place in front of minors, who themselves became targets of violence. In February, a large number of women were also targeted in political retaliation, putting their lives in danger.
As the systematic violence and murders against women continue, financial well-being has sharply deteriorated since the end of 2022 and into 2023 due to price increases and social insecurity, according to the organisers of the march. "This makes women more dependent and prevents them from escaping the violent environment."
"We want to LIVE without becoming victims of femicides, without suffering in poverty, without being subject to political revenge, and we demand the following:
Ensure the safety of women's lives.
Stop the use of political revenge against women immediately.
Investigate crimes against women in a legal and just manner, and hold the perpetrators accountable.
Adopt the Istanbul Convention.
Implement policies that will improve the social welfare of citizens.
Implement programs for the financial support of women from vulnerable groups.
Remove all barriers for women's networking, unity, and struggle.
Ensure equal rights for everyone regardless of gender and sexual orientation."
With these demands, the feminist community in Azerbaijan has announced the traditional "8 March - We Want to Live!" march on March 8, 2023, at 3:00 pm. The march will start from Nizami Street, in front of Mc.Donalds, and will end in front of the "Xurshidbanu Natavan" statue (at the intersection of Aziz Aliyev and M.E. Rasulzadeh streets). The march will be considered over once the statement is read out.
