Japanese court rules against same-sex marriage ban

Japanese court has declared the prohibition on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, marking a major victory for LGBTQ+ rights. 

The Nagoya District Court became the second court in Japan to rule against the ban, despite Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's claims of non-discrimination. 

Japan is the only G7 nation that does not recognize same-sex marriage. 

Activists and supporters celebrated the ruling, which followed the submission of a bill by the Constitutional Democratic Party seeking legalization of same-sex marriage. 

Public opinion polls show strong support for marriage equality, with around 69 percent of the Japanese population in favor.
