Duolingo removes LGBTI+ content at the request of Roskomnadzor
Duolingo has officially informed Roskomnadzor that it has removed content from its service that users may mistake for “LGBT propaganda.”
According to a Roskomnadzor representative, Duolingo sent an official letter confirming that all materials containing references to “non-traditional” sexual relationships have been removed from the educational application, Interfax reports.
The letter was a response to a request sent on April 10, in which the agency warned the company to review and remove content that violates Russian laws prohibiting “LGBT propaganda.”
The amount of the fine for such a violation varies from 1 to 4 million rubles. In case of further violations, access to the service may be limited. The department also noted that there are analogues of Duolingo on the Russian market, which still “do not meet national requirements.”
