At least 50 people have been arrested in China in the past six months for writing stories and fan fiction that feature gay erotica, it has emerged. Some of the writers have been given heavy fines and prison sentences.
For at least six months, people who write gay erotic stories in China have been arrested and face prison sentences, according to multiple reports and social media posts. This was reported by Kaos GL.
A “special task force” tasked with targeting online distributors of erotic fiction has detained more than 50 writers in Anhui province, according to Radio Free Asia, citing newspapers in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, as well as social media posts by writers and their family members on online writing communities.
Most of the writers were arrested after publishing on Haitang Literature, a Taiwan-based adult fiction site that allows writers to earn money through tips and subscriptions. One of the most popular genres on the site is “danmei” – romantic and sexual relationships between men. Ten of those sentenced had published gay erotica.
