UN is planning to close UNAIDS
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has published a report outlining a plan for restructuring the UN system. One of the points is the abandonment of UNAIDS. HIV activists are signing a letter opposing this move.
The report "Shifting Paradigms - United to Deliver" was published last Thursday, September 18. One of the points concerns the abolition of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
“We plan to close UNAIDS by the end of 2026. This will mean integrating its capacity and expertise into the relevant structures of the UN development system in 2027,” the report states.
This news came as a surprise to HIV service organizations worldwide.
The NGO delegation to the UNAIDS Coordinating Board condemned the proposal. Activists are calling on civil society representatives to join the campaign to save UNAIDS amid the crisis in the existing response to the epidemic.
