European Commission adopts LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy for 2026-2030
The European Commission has approved the LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy for 2026-2030. The document aims to promote LGBTQI+ equality across all EU policies.
The document notes that while public acceptance of LGBTQI+ rights has increased over the past five years, people belonging to this group are still disproportionately and unacceptably exposed to hate, violence and discrimination.
The report highlights that one in four LGBTQI+ people have experienced physical or sexual violence, verbal abuse and degrading treatment.
The new strategy aims to strengthen the fight against hatred against LGBTQI+ people, protect them from all forms of violence, ensure that they live in an environment free from discrimination and with equal rights, and increase participation at all levels of society in this regard.
The European LGBTQI+ organization ILGA-Europe evaluated the adoption of the strategy as a positive step, stating that while this document is important, some of the goals set for the previous period have not yet been fully realized.
