LGBTQI+ Americans seek asylum in Canada after Renee Nicole Good's killing
As safety fears among the LGBTQI+ community in the United States grow, so too do searches for ways to seek asylum in Canada. This was reported by PinkNews. Google searches for "LGBTQ+ asylum Canada" have spiked since Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis.
Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot during an ICE operation in Minneapolis on January 8. The city said she was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. A video of the incident shows a woman who identified herself as his wife sitting in the snow, crying.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly condemned the incident and called on ICE to leave the city. He said the agency's actions were increasing violence rather than creating safety.
The incident came a year after US President Donald Trump took office. During this time, the Trump administration has issued a series of anti-LGBTQI+ executive orders, including a decision recognising only two genders, limiting gender-affirming care services for trans youth under the age of 19, eliminating DEI programs in the military, and declaring trans people "unfit" for military service.
