Media reportedly hiding information about trans woman murder in Baku

On February 20, information was released that a trans woman named Aydan was murdered in a hotel. According to QıyVaar, although the fact was confirmed, the information about the incident was not reported in the media and was kept secret because one of the deceased’s close relatives was an official.

The failure to publicly report the murder of a trans woman demonstrates how the lives and safety of queers, especially trans women, who are the most vulnerable group, are being devalued in public discourse. The lack of official or media information about the incident leads to the invisibility of violence, the erasure of the victim’s identity, and the weakening of public accountability. Keeping information about cases of violence against trans people secret reinforces a climate of fear and self-censorship within the community.

In such cases, queer identities are often either silenced or not mentioned at all. This not only leaves trans people more vulnerable to violence, but also keeps their rights and safety needs out of public discussion.
