“This act of hate shows once again that homophobia reigns on our island”

A homophobic attack was carried out on an LGBTI+ event in the south of Cyprus. One person was injured. President Nikos Christodoulides condemned the attack.

A hooded group carried out a homophobic attack on the LGBTI+ event at the Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol. On February 22, the attackers, who covered their faces in the attack at the university in the south of Cyprus, raided the event, attacked the participants with homophobic insults and threw a fire extinguisher at them. During the incident, one person was injured because of it.

The LGBTI+ rights organisation ACCEPT, which organised the event, said, “The attack spread panic among participants, both due to its menace but also because of the number of hooded men. “These bullying acts of hatred simply prove that homophobia reigns in our island and that we must do more with more courage and tenacity.”
