Italy: Far-right PM against the LGBTQI+s

Italian PM orders halt to registration of same-sex couples' children, sparking outrage.

Italy's far-right prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has instructed councils to stop registering children of same-sex parents. This was reported by Pink News.

Milan's mayor confirmed that he had received instructions from the government's interior ministry to stop registering children with two mothers or two fathers.

Italy has no formal protections for same-sex parents, and same-sex unions were only legalised in 2016. The move survived opposition from conservative groups across the country. However, Italy did not grant equal adoption rights over fears that this would encourage surrogate pregnancies.

While surrogate pregnancies in Italy are illegal, courts in some parts of the country have allowed people in same-sex relationships to adopt their partner's children.

Milan's mayor said he would respect the order, but would continue fighting for the rights of same-sex parents and their children.
