USA: Hate crimes are expected to increase during the 2024 election

New report from civil rights group The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights (LCEF) has warned that hate crimes are likely to increase during the 2024 presidential race in the United States.

The report analysed FBI hate crime data from the last 15 years and found an "unmistakable pattern" showing that reported hate crimes increase during election cycles.

The report found that the current climate is "rife with opportunities for the trend of increased hate to continue" in the 2024 election.

The study shows that hate crimes increased during the historic election of Barack Obama in 2008 and during Donald Trump's presidential campaign in 2016, which "empowered white nationalists and provided them with a platform".

The findings are worrying and highlight the need for increased awareness and action to combat hate crimes.
