Putin signs law banning gender transition in Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law banning gender transition in Russia. This information was reported by the Russian Service of Radio Liberty. The document has been published on the official portal of legal information.

According to the document, surgical interventions and hormone therapy will be prohibited within the framework of gender transition in Russia. These procedures will only be allowed for the treatment of "congenital physiological anomalies of gender formation" in children.

Additionally, even for individuals who have undergone gender transition in another country, changing gender markers in documents will be prohibited in Russia. Transgender individuals will not be allowed to adopt children or become their legal guardians. Furthermore, if one of the spouses undergoes gender transition, the government will dissolve the marriage.

The law comes into force from the date of its publication.

Since December 2022, the dissemination of positive information about homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgenderism is prohibited in Russia. For individuals, fines of up to 400,000 rubles and for organizations, fines of up to 5 million rubles are envisaged for violating this law.
