Greece will legalise same-sex marriages

Greece's center-right government said last week it would honour its pledge to legalise same-sex marriage, brushing aside fierce opposition from the country's influential Orthodox Church.

According to AP News, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said the law would be introduced in parliament during the current term of parliament, which ends in 2027.

The statement came after the Holy Synod, which governs the Church, issued an opinion expressing complete opposition to the proposal. The Church's main argument concerned the upbringing of children, claiming that they were treated as "accessories" and "pets" for same-sex couples.

“We always respectfully listen to the views of the Church,” Marinakis said and added: “But at the same time, we are implementing our own policy and will also listen to the views of society, civil society, citizens, institutions and parties in general.”
