Czech Republic expands rights for same-sex couples

New rules come into force in January of this year.

Changes for same-sex couples will be introduced in the Czech Republic in January 2025. Now, same-sex couples will have access to almost all the benefits that heterosexual spouses have. However, one ban will still remain.

Since 2006, the Czech Republic has had a “registered partnership” institution that allows civil marriage between queer people. Now, such an institution will cease to exist — same-sex couples will be able to enter into a partnership that will effectively be equivalent to marriage.

Same-sex couples will have the right to common property, inheritance, access to information about their partner’s health, and will also be able to draw up a widow/widower pension agreement. At the same time, same-sex couples are still deprived of the opportunity to adopt children — currently, they can only adopt the biological child of one of the partners.
