ILGA-Europe launches campaign against EU's withdrawal of anti-discrimination legislation
“The withdrawal of the proposed directive without a suitable alternative will seriously damage the EU’s reputation and expose millions to discrimination.”
In February, the European Commission announced its intention to withdraw the anti-discrimination legislative proposal known as the EU Horizontal Equal Treatment Directive. This proposal aimed to combat discrimination in areas such as healthcare, education, housing, and many other sectors. It was designed to ensure stronger protections against discrimination based on religion or belief, disability, age, and sexual orientation, and to establish a comprehensive framework for the protection of all groups at risk of exclusion in every aspect of life.
ILGA-Europe together with All Out, AGE Platform Europe, EL*C, ENAR, ERGO Network, IGLYO, OII Europe, and TGEU, launched a petition calling on the European Commission not to withdraw the proposal.
“This step comes at a time when far-right forces are gaining strength both within and beyond the EU, posing serious threats to democracy, equality, and human rights across the continent. Instead of taking decisive action to protect groups at risk of marginalization — such as LGBTI+ people, older adults, youth, people with disabilities, and religious minorities — the European Commission has chosen inaction. This sends a dangerous message that equality is negotiable,” the organizations participating in the campaign stated.
