"Corridor with cabinets II" by Werker Collective
Currently on view at Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Corridor with cabinets II by Werker Collective showcases a powerful archival installation connecting the struggles of labour, ecofeminist, and LGBTQI+ movements across time. At its heart is the magazine Nieuwe Nieuwsmarkt, which revisits the historic Nieuwmarkt riots and raises the question: who has the right to shape the city?
The installation draws on the legacy of artist Constant, who moved to the Nieuwmarkt neighborhood after the riots. Much like in his vision of New Babylon, residents were once deeply involved in shaping their living environment—unlike today’s increasingly restricted space for protest.
