Court in Lithuania recognises lesbian couple as a family for the first time

This is a historic decision that opens the door for other same-sex couples.

For the first time, a Lithuanian court has ordered the state to register the partnership of two women, recognizing their relationship as a family. According to LTR, this is the first such case in the country.

Lawyer Aivaras Žilvinskas, who represented the couple, called the decision historic. In his words, it opens the door for the legalization of relationships between other couples as well.

“The court says clearly: this is a family. Not a new form of union, but a full-fledged family. Now same-sex couples are legally equal to heterosexual ones,” noted Aivaras Žilvinskas.

Previously, Lithuania’s Constitutional Court had ruled that the institution of partnership, as defined in the Civil Code, contradicted the Constitution because it only provided for unions between a man and a woman. That ruling became the basis for the current court decision.
