Trans activist Alex Shah reports harassment at Chisinau airport

Trans rights activist Alex Shah reported facing transphobia and mistreatment at Chisinau Airport.

In a public statement, Shah said police and passport control officers mocked their name and appearance in Russian, used slurs, and laughed at them in groups. Shah was taken to a separate room and left without information while their passport was withheld.

“I feel terrified and unsafe,” they wrote on social media.

On attempting to file a complaint, Shah said the police dismissed their case. One officer first told them to speak Russian and refused to continue in English, suggesting they send an SMS instead. When Shah called again, they were told the police do not handle such matters and were instructed to contact the airport directly.
