Baku police detain LGBTQI+s ahead of Formula 1

Trans woman Aydan reported that last week, in the run-up to the Formula 1 race, Baku police arbitrarily detained numerous LGBTQI+ people who were sitting in the city’s Malakan Garden park and took them to police stations. They were told not to be visible in public or gather in parks during the race days.

Aydan believes that the police action was aimed at “preserving aesthetics” in the city during a period of increased tourism.

It was also reported that trans woman Rima was detained and arrested that same day. Her close friend Aydan told Minority Azerbaijan: “Rima was among those taken to the station that day. When she asked why she was being detained, she couldn’t control her nerves and raised her voice. Because of this, the police unlawfully arrested and framed her. Later, some news websites tried to smear her reputation by claiming she was a drug user and blackmailed people.”

Her relatives said she has never used drugs nor promoted their use. On social media, baseless accusations were shared against Rima under a name and surname she does not use.

According to available information, Rima is currently being held at the Binagadi District Police Department.

Aydan and other LGBTQI+ people expressed concern about what happened and fear they might face the same fate. They want to know the reasons for Rima’s detention and her whereabouts.

Minority Azerbaijan contacted the police department where she is reportedly being held. However, the police refused to provide any information, citing the confidentiality of personal data.
