Homophobic Rejection from Print Shops in Baku
Nigar Safarova, founder of the “Onlar Əylənir (red. They Have Fun)” queer media initiative, faced homophobic attitudes and rejection from several print shops in the capital. She shared the experience with Minority Azerbaijan.
Nigar decided to print a few stickers for the “They Have Fun” initiative. One of the stickers featured the classic LGBTQI+ flag along with the initiative’s logo. Usually, she prints such materials at her regular print shop, but since they had a large number of orders, she began looking for other places offering printing services. However, she encountered negative responses from two businesses.
“At the first place, they said the management does not allow LGBTQ+ flags, so they couldn’t print it. Later, I approached another shop in Icherisheher. They also said they wouldn’t be able to print it.
I believe the only reason for this is homophobia,” said Nigar Safarova.
At the second shop, they simply refused to print the logo without any explanation. Nigar Safarova believes there is a need to boycott such establishments.
