Kazakhstan bans "LGBTQI+ propaganda"

On November 12, the lower house of the Kazakh parliament (Mäjilis) adopted amendments that would ban activities called “promotion of non-traditional sexual relations.” The bill will now be debated in the Senate before becoming law for the president to sign.

In early November, a parliamentary working group approved a draft law that would impose fines and up to 10 days in prison for repeated offenses for activities it classifies as “promotion of non-traditional relations and pedophilia.”

The changes to the law replicate similar restrictions adopted in Russia and several other post-Soviet countries. The bill was easily passed in the plenary session, as the Kazakh parliament has a majority of deputies loyal to the government.

The law must be signed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for it to come into force. Tokayev has repeatedly stated in recent months that he supports “the preservation of traditional values.”
