Accused of murdering queer youth in Baku brought to court

Today, a trial was held at the Baku Court of Grave Crimes under the chairmanship of Judge Elmin Rustamov on a serious murder case that occurred in the center of Baku. The case involves the uncle of the deceased Yasin Ibadov, Babek Ibadov, accused of premeditated murder.

According to local media, the accused stated that he was not familiar with the indictment. The court hearing was scheduled for January 26.

The incident took place on November 4, 2025, on Bashir Safaroglu Street in the Sabail district of Baku. Yasin Seymur oglu Ibadov, born in 2006, was stabbed to death. As a result of operational measures taken by police officers, the uncle of the deceased, 38-year-old Babek Ibadov, who was suspected of the murder, was detained.

It was reported that the deceased Yasin Ibadov was queer. They were known in their inner circle as “Rüzgar.” The incident caused deep concern within the queer community and brought the issue of LGBTQI+ safety in Azerbaijan back to the agenda.

A criminal case has been opened in the Nasimi District Prosecutor’s Office regarding the incident. Babek Ibadova has been charged under Articles 120.2.2 (homicide with hooligan intent), 120.2.4 (homicide with special cruelty), 221.3 (hooliganism with the use of weapons), and 228.5 (illegal carrying of cold weapons) of the Criminal Code.
