Canadian PM jokes with ‘Heated Rivalry’ star at Ottawa film premiere
On January 30, Mark Carney appeared on the red carpet with Hudson Williams, the star of the HBO series Heated Rivalry, at a film premiere in Ottawa, Canada, and jokingly asked the actor to “do his footwork,” referencing a famous scene from the series.
According to the Guardian, the episode marked a more informal and humorous moment for Carney after his recent serious speeches at the World Economic Forum in Davos. At the gala, Williams presented Carney with a jacket decorated with maple leaves from the series, a gesture that was well received by attendees.
Speaking at the event, Carney criticized the content of the Heated Rivalry series, saying that some studios in the United States had asked him to “toned down” it. He noted that the series is about the relationship between two secret gay hockey rivals, and said that this story could only be produced in Canada, which is accepting of diversity. Carney also emphasized the importance of LGBTQI+ rights in light of the growing threats to their global status, noting that the series shows the fear of young men living openly. He jokingly took credit for the series' public funding, saying that Canada's cultural policy allows for such projects.
