Former MP calls for a ban on the LGBTQI+ community
The former MP demands a ban on the LGBTQI+ community in Azerbaijan, and also calls for TikTok to be blocked.
On 3 February 2026, former member of parliament and political analyst Jumshud Nuriyev published an open letter addressed to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, which circulated on social media and smaller media platforms.
In his letter, Nuriyev focused on what he described as the “moral degradation” of young people and the influence of foreign online content. He claimed that “immoral” profiles on the social media platform TikTok serve as role models for youth and warned that this could lead to “tragic consequences.”
In his appeal, Nuriyev explicitly called on the President and Vice-President to ban TikTok in Azerbaijan and to prohibit the LGBTQI+ community altogether.
According to Nuriyev, such platforms and what he referred to as a “fifth column” deliberately promote this content in order to undermine national identity, arguing that immediate action should be taken to stop it.
