Rüzgar’s mother says she has forgiven the accused

On February 23, a hearing was held at the Baku Court of Grave Crimes in the criminal case concerning the murder of queer citizen Yasin Seymur oglu Ibadov, born in 2006 and known as “Rüzgar.” The accused is the victim’s uncle, Babek Ibadov. The hearing was presided over by Judge Elmin Rustamov. In court, the victim’s legal successor, his mother I.S., testified that she had no complaint against the accused and had forgiven him. In the initial statement announced in the case, it was noted that Yasin Ibadov was queer and that hatred had arisen against him within the family for this reason. Meydan TV reported on the case.

According to the investigation materials, Yasin Ibadov’s sexual and gender identity was not accepted within the family. The initial statement indicated that the accused could not accept that his nephew was queer. This fact shows that queer identity was framed as something “unacceptable” within the family and that this led to violence. The mother’s decision not to file a complaint and her position of forgiveness also raises questions about the role of intra-family relations in the legal process. In cases of violence against queer individuals, the family’s stance often influences both public perception and the pursuit of justice.

The incident reportedly took place on November 6 of last year in Baku’s Sabail district. Yasin Ibadov was killed after sustaining multiple stab wounds. According to witnesses, bystanders did not intervene at the scene, and police and emergency medical services arrived late. It was also reported that the deceased had previously lived in Turkey and had told those close to him that he was being threatened by relatives.

Babek Ibadov has been charged under the Criminal Code with murder committed with particular cruelty, murder with hooligan intent, hooliganism, and illegal possession of a weapon. The next court hearing has been scheduled for March 4.
