New York City mayor creates office for LGBTQI+ issues
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the creation of the city's first mayoral office for LGBTQI+ affairs. It will be led by Taylor Brown, the first openly trans woman appointed to lead a city agency.
According to Mamdani, the decision is the result of years of advocacy, which has repeatedly highlighted how LGBTQI+ people too often face barriers in accessing city services. The new office will coordinate the work of city agencies and ensure that queer New Yorkers remain in the social support system.
The mayor also noted that the new structure will focus on how various agencies can more effectively support queer New Yorkers, who are disproportionately affected by homelessness, job insecurity, and difficulties accessing health care.
