Police attacked students carrying LGBTI+ flags in Boğaziçi

In Boğaziçi, police attacked and detained 4 students carrying rainbow flags representing LGBTI+s. They also attacked and detained students who protested the detention of their friends.

In Hisarüstüstü Neighborhood, where Boğaziçi University is also located, 4 students were detained on the grounds that they "carried the LGBTI+ flag".

Today, there was also a disciplinary investigation opened against a student who carried a rainbow flag during protests against the appointment of the rector of Boğaziçi University. N.D., who opened the rainbow flag during the protests attacked by the police on February 1, a disciplinary investigation was opened against him with the statements that "he went up and waved the LGBTI+ flag in his hand". N.D. would testify today as part of the investigation.

The police attacked the students trying to enter the university to support their friends. In Hisarüstü, where Boğaziçi University is located, police detained 4 people on the grounds that they were "carrying the LGBTI+ flag".

According to the live broadcast of Boğaziçi TV,  the police said, "We don't care what you are. This flag is forbidden”. However, the police arbitrarily detained students, making no explanation as to why and how the LGBTI+ flag was banned.

Students gathered in front of the university's North Campus to protest the detention of their fellows. The police surrounded the students. They tried to prevent students from coming together by citing the pandemic as a reason. Students chanted "Let our friends be released" and "We are not silent, we are not afraid, we do not obey".

The police also attacked students who protested the attack on their friends. They kicked a dog too. Police detained at least 5 students in this attack. 

While Boğaziçi TV was broadcasting all day's events live, the connection was lost after the attack.
