Trans woman was murdered in Baku

The body of a woman was found burnt in Puta settlement of Garadagh region three days ago.

The local trans community told Minority Azerbaijan that the victim was a trans woman named Nuray, who celebrated her birthday as wedding in July and became known on social media. Initial autopsy suggests she was stabbed to death with her hands tied on August 18.

In the evening of August 24, the local trans community held a rally in front of the Ombudsman's Office to protest the murder of the trans woman.

Protesters also drew attention to blogger Sevinj Huseynova, who was very transphobic and homophobic and demanding the isolation of trans people from society on her Instagram account in July this year. They said such calls played a role in the attacks on trans folks. They demanded that measures be taken against Sevinj Huseynova.

It should be noted that in the rankings of the international LGBTI + organisation ILGA-Europe, Azerbaijan has been ranked last amongst 49 European countries for the protection of LGBTI+ rights for the last five years. Homophobic and transphobic crimes regularly occur in the country.
