China's homophobic politicians threaten Hong Kong Gay Games

The 11th Gay Games, which will take place in Hong Kong between 11-19 November 2022, are under threat due to the homophobic statements of Chinese lawmakers.

In an exclusive report by The Washington Post's Thodora Yu, pro-Beijing deputy Junius Ho described the Gay Games as "shameful" and a "wolf in sheep's clothing" that could violate security law.

In her news, Yu also includes another MP Priscilla Leung's statement that homosexuality can be "tolerated" but cannot be promoted, while conveying the answer that the Hong Kong government does not approve of Beijing's homophobic rhetoric.

This homophobic intervention by China against Gay Games was made possible in May by the Chinese People's Congress ratifying the national security law in Hong Kong, the autonomous region, which includes measures against "separatist, overthrowing movements, terrorism and foreign interference".

The previous stop of the Gay Games, which was planned to take place in an Asian country for the first time, was held in Paris in 2018.
