Murderer of Avaz Hafizli was sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in prison

Today, July 29, at 3:30 p.m., the verdict on the murder of Avaz Hafizli (Shikhmammadov) was read in the Baku Court of Grave Crimes. Amrulla Gulaliyev was found guilty of murdering Awaz and was imprisoned for 9 years and 6 months.

In his speech, the judge said that the crime was rightly described by Article 120.1 of the Criminal Code and that there were no aggravating circumstances in Gulaliyev's actions. The fact that he voluntarily surrendered to the 12th police station, handed over the criminal tool, regretted his act, as well as the fact that the victim's legal heir reconciled with the criminal were considered mitigating circumstances.

It should be noted that the public prosecutor asked the accused to be imprisoned for 10 years and 6 months.

Interviewed after the court session, LGBTQ+ activists Ali Malikov and Gulnara Mehdiyeva expressed their displeasure and disagreements with the sentence. They pointed out that the murder was a hate crime, and at the same time, they protested the failure of state institutions that did not consider Avaz Hafizli's complaints agaisnt the blogger Sevinj Huseynova, who targeted Avaz Hafizli, to be held accountable.
