LGBTI+ victory in Brazil

Homophobic president Bolsonaro defeated in elections.

Brazil's far-right, homophobic president Jair Bolsonaro lost to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the presidential election.

In one of the most important and divisive elections in the country's history, Silva, who served as president from 2003 to 2010, received 50.9% of the vote and Bolsonaro 49.10%.

Following his victory, Silva, 77, said Brazil would experience "new times of peace, love and hope".

After Silva was found guilty of corruption allegations, he was not allowed to run in the 2018 elections. After spending 580 days in prison, his conviction was revoked.

The historic vote is also a victory for Brazilian LGBTI+s. Speaking on the subject, 19-year-old Luna said, “This means that we will have someone in power who cares about the lowest. Right now, there is a person who mostly doesn't care about us, LGBTs. Bolsonaro… a bad person.”

“Bolsonaro has not shown a drop of empathy or solidarity for others. It was not possible for him to continue as president.”
