The struggle of Indian LGBTQ+ couples

Indian LGBTQ couples are fighting for legal recognition of same-sex marriage as they seek to solidify their families and relationships. This was reported by NPR.

Four same-sex couples, including Aditi Anand and Susan Dias, have petitioned the Supreme Court of India to legalize same-sex marriage. The case was accepted in January, and the government was asked to present their case in February, with the court hearing the matter on March 13th.

Legalizing same-sex marriage would have far-reaching implications for other Indian laws. Advocates say it would grant LGBTQ couples the same rights as heterosexual couples, including adoption, inheritance, and property rights. Currently, same-sex relationships are decriminalized, but same-sex marriage is not recognized, leaving LGBTQ couples without legal protection.

Anand and Dias, who have been together for 12 years and have a child together, are hopeful that the court will rule in their favour. "We want the same rights as any other married couple in India," said Anand. "We want to have our relationship recognized and protected by the law."
