Tory government funding anti-LGBTQ+ groups in Uganda
Report by the Institute for Journalism and Social Change (IJSC) has revealed that the UK government is providing funding to anti-LGBTQ+ groups in Uganda.
The report highlights the “staggering” scale of connections between international donors and anti-LGBTQ+ organisations in Uganda.
Since 2014, countries such as the UK and the US have reportedly donated $75m to projects where anti-LGBTQ+ organisations are involved. While there is no evidence that any of this money specifically funded anti-LGBTQI activities, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) has directly received over £100,000 of UK aid.
In 2014, the IRCU and other conservative religious groups were involved in pushing for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in Uganda, which included the death penalty. The bill was ruled invalid, but the IRCU has since vowed to get it back on to the floor of Uganda’s parliament.
The proposed law would effectively make being queer illegal, with the death penalty a possible punishment.
