Uganda: Forced to flee for being LGBTQI+

As Uganda passes an anti-homosexuality bill that allows for life imprisonment for anyone who identifies as LGBT, many people have been beaten and forced to flee the country.

Though the provision for life imprisonment has been removed, the legislation still remains one of the harshest anti-gay laws in Africa. The bill also states that aggravated offenses like child abuse may result in the death penalty.

Young person who fled Uganda due to the law has shared their experiences. Diane was brutally beaten by her girlfriend's father and two other men before being locked in a house for three days. She and her girlfriend were eventually rescued by an LGBT community friend and had to flee their home under the cover of darkness.
