Thailand’s marriage equality law will come into effect on January 22
With the law coming into effect, Thailand will become the first country in Southeast Asia to grant same-sex couples the right to marry.
The marriage equality law, which was passed in Thailand on June 15, 2024, will come into effect on January 22. The law, which was passed by the Thai parliament, will become the first country in Southeast Asia to grant same-sex couples the right to marry.
The law amends the country’s Civil Code and ensures that same-sex married couples have legal, medical and financial rights, as well as the right to inherit and adopt. The new law also requires gender-neutral language to be used instead of binary language in official documents.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin described the law as a “significant step” for Thailand. “Equality and justice have become tangible in Thai society,” Thavisin said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to equal rights for LGBTQI+ couples.
