MPs clash over proposed changes to Equality Act

Heated Westminster debate on Monday saw politicians arguing over proposed alterations to the Equality Act.

One petition called for redefining 'sex' as 'biological sex,' while another opposed the changes.

The debate followed a letter from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) suggesting that such revisions could provide legal clarity but may impact the trans community.

Trans activists and LGBTQ+ allies expressed concern, criticising the proposed changes as driven by politics and fear rather than evidence.

The UN's expert on sexual orientation and gender identity highlighted the EHRC's lack of a clear definition for 'biological sex.'
