Russia Passes Bill Prohibiting Gender Change

The Russian State Duma has approved a bill prohibiting gender reassignment and transition after its third reading.

The new law brings significant changes: registry offices will no longer issue gender reassignment documents, medical interventions for transition are banned, psychiatric help will not focus on gender affirming, marriages will be automatically annulled if a spouse undergoes transition, and trans individuals are prohibited from adopting children.

The bill's implementation will render corresponding acts obsolete. The legislation raises debates on gender identity, individual rights, and societal norms in Russia.
