Climate change is a growing concern for LGBTQI+ youth

This is stated in the latest research report from The Trevor Project.

Many young LGBTQI+s are concerned about climate change, according to a recent research report from The Trevor Project. Most reported being “very worried” about climate change.

The report was based on data from the 2024 National Survey of the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People in the United States, conducted by The Trevor Project, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

55% of respondents said they often worry about climate change, 38% sometimes worry, and only 7% said they don't worry about it at all. However, concern about climate change is associated with a number of variables.

People aged 18 to 24 living in large cities (59%) worry about this most often. Those who have difficulty meeting basic needs reported worrying about climate change more often than those who do not experience such difficulties. Non-binary people were also more likely to express concern than cisgender men.

Additionally, concern about climate change was associated with measures of depressive and anxiety symptoms. Those who reported symptoms of anxiety were more likely to report being worried about climate change (59%) than those who did not (47%). Similar to symptoms of depression, those who reported it were more likely to worry about climate change (58%).
