New scientific research unmasks ‘normalisation surgeries’

The study found that 39 percent of intersex people who had been subjected to non-consensual interventions had attempted suicide at least once.

For many years, surgeons have been using the excuse of “making people who are reconciled to the binary gender system happy members of society” as an excuse for intersex surgeries that do not require informed consent or have health reasons. A recent study from the UK examines the experiences of ageing intersex people and reveals that the lives of those who undergo the interventions are not as promised.

The study, conducted by Dr. Adeline Berry, a senior research fellow in the Faculty of Human and Health Sciences at the University of Huddersfield, and her colleagues, reveals the shocking data that 39 percent of survivors of non-consensual surgery have attempted suicide at least once. The study, The Experiences and Needs of Older European Intersex People, focuses on the narratives of 20 intersex people over the age of 50. The experiences touch particularly on issues of age and ageing, disability, sexuality, gender identity, social pressures, medical rights violations, education, employment and mental health.
