Candidate calls for criminalisation of LGBTQI+s
Presidential candidate proposes criminal prosecution of LGBTQI+s in Belarus.
The elections are scheduled for January 26 in Belarus.
This month, on January 26, the presidential elections in Belarus will be held. The Central Electoral Commission has registered five candidates. One of them, communist Sergei Syrankov, promises in his election program to increase repression and introduce criminal liability for "LGBT propaganda and practice."
At the same time, the website of the Communist Party of Belarus says that the party is nominating Sergei Syrankov for president "not instead of, but together with" Alexander Lukashenko. It is worth noting that the presidential campaign is taking place under the complete control of the authorities. There is not a single candidate in these elections who would oppose the policies of the current government.
