Queer slang in Azerbaijan
Queer communities across the world often develop their own unique language, a "slang" that allows individuals to express themselves in ways that connect with their identities. In Azerbaijan, this language—"gay lexicon"—includes a variety of terms that have emerged from within the LGBTQI+ community. These expressions are reflective of shared experiences. While many terms come from Russian influences, some are distinctively Azerbaijani and have been shaped by local culture and context. Below are some of the most commonly used positive terms in the Azerbaijani queer community:
1. Qıy [red. sashay]– A term used to describe someone who is playful, fashionable, or a bit feminine. Often, it’s a compliment for someone with a good sense of style or flair.
2. Qıy-bacı [red. gay who sashays]– A term for a feminine gay person, commonly used as a term of endearment within the community.
3. Defka [red. sassy gay]– Refers to a feminine gay person. While this term originally stemmed from Russian, it has become an affectionate term used in many queer circles.
4. Xoşlayanski – This playful term refers to someone who seems to like something or someone. It’s used when someone shows interest or attraction.
5. Qoluboy [red. blue, comes from Stalin’s GULags] – Literally translated as "homosexual." It’s a neutral term and is often used to refer to someone who identifies as gay in a respectful manner.
6. Koroleva – A term meaning "queen," often used to refer to a well-known or admired gay person in the community. This can be seen as a compliment, especially when someone is celebrated for their confidence and presence.
7. Tanrıça – "Goddess." A term that elevates someone, often used for a person who commands respect or admiration in the queer community, akin to being an icon or role model.
8. Layihə [red. project] – A term used for a planned sexual meeting, but also used to refer to something special or important in someone’s life.
9. Dama – Refers to a distinguished or elite person in the queer community, someone who is considered stylish or sophisticated.
10. Matı – A term of affection, akin to calling someone "sweetie" or "honey." It’s used in a caring and loving manner.
These terms are part of the evolving lexicon of the queer community in Azerbaijan. They serve as a way for individuals to bond, express their identities, and support one another in a world that may often be hostile to their existence.
