Emir Can İğrek dedicated a song to Isa Shahmarli

Turkish singer Emir Can İğrek has dedicated one of his songs to Isa Shahmarli. He announced this during his performance at a concert held in Kadıköy on 28 June:

“When I wrote this song, I wrote it for Isa Shahmarli and Eylül Cansın. I also made references to them in its music video. I wrote it for everyone who has been cast aside. I hadn’t performed it for a while. Now I’m performing the song Sapa for everyone we have lost — those torn away from this life, left alone in neighbourhoods, streets, and homes; those subjected to violence because of their sexual orientation; those excluded from this society.”

It should be noted that Sapa was written by Emir Can İğrek in 2020. Isa Shahmarli and Eylül Cansın, to whom the song is dedicated, were victims of queerphobia. Isa Shahmarli, the head of the “Free LGBT” organisation, hanged himself with a rainbow flag on 22 January 2014. Trans woman Eylül Cansın died by suicide on 5 January 2015, jumping from the Bosphorus Bridge.
