Lawyer: “No discrimination against any social group should be allowed”

In an article published on Demokrat.az, lawyer Shamil Pashayev stated that the adoption of a separate law on the rights of LGBTQ+s depends on the decision of the parliament.

According to Pashayev, the Constitution protects the rights of every citizen on the basis of the principle of equality, and the rights of women, children, and LGBTQ+s should be ensured within the framework of general laws. In his opinion, the need for the adoption of a separate law in this area depends on the will of the Milli Majlis.

According to the lawyer, the problem of discrimination against LGBTQ+ people is not unique to Azerbaijan:

"Similar situations are observed in many underdeveloped societies. Such attitudes exist in Eastern countries, Islamic countries, the post-Soviet space, and even in a number of Eastern European countries. In fact, non-discrimination against other people based on their religious, sexual, or racial affiliation is more widely observed only in highly developed countries. However, discrimination against people of all social groups, including transgender people, should not be allowed."

Shamil Pashayev also spoke out against hate speech and hostility:

"Society should be loyal to each other, and ideas that instill hatred and hostility between people should not be spread either on social media or in the media. Everyone should live their lives on the basis of equal rights and opportunities, in accordance with their nature, gender, race, and language."
