Heterosexual contact predominates in cases of HIV infection
The Republican AIDS Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the support of the Global Fund, held another training on the topic of “Organization and responsibilities of outreach work, Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), HIV screening with oral fluid tests” within the framework of the 2025 training program.
According to the Center, representatives of non-governmental organizations working with population groups at high risk of infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) participated in the training. The participants were provided with detailed information about the ways of HIV/AIDS spread, the importance of preventive measures, and the current epidemiological situation in the world, as well as in Azerbaijan.
According to the statistical indicators provided by the Center, the majority of HIV infection cases are heterosexual contact - this indicator was 59.9 percent. At the same time, infection as a result of injection drug use accounted for 28.8 percent, and infection through homosexual contact accounted for 6.3 percent. Other cases of infection included cases of unknown origin (3.6 percent), mother-to-child transmission (1.4 percent), and infection through donor blood (0.01 percent).
Cooperation between both government agencies and civil society institutions plays an important role in the fight against HIV. Experts believe that strengthening preventive measures, increasing public awareness, and eliminating stigma are key areas for preventing infection.
