CHP vows to end discrimination against LGBTQI+s

Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has unanimously adopted a new party program that pledges to fight discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The decision was announced on the first day of the party’s 39th congress, held at the Ankara Arena under the slogan “Now is the time for power.” This was reported by Kaos GL

The congress opened without an audience, with photos of imprisoned mayors and a “Justice First, Freedom First” banner made by women on stage. The party’s updated program was put to a vote and approved on the first day. The program outlines six main areas: Democracy, Governance and Justice, Development, Social State, Foreign Policy, Security and Resistance.

Commitment to eliminating discrimination

Although the new program does not directly mention the acronym LGBTQI+, the section “Fighting Discrimination and Pluralism for Democracy” specifically emphasizes the prevention of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The document states that the state will establish a system that makes every citizen feel “equal and worthy”:

“A system will be established in which no one is isolated or oppressed due to their age, gender, identity, belief, gender identity and sexual orientation, socio-economic status, disability, worldview, lifestyle or similar reasons. Our main priority will be to ensure that no citizen is forced to hide their identity.”

The program also notes that the protection of linguistic and cultural diversity and the free existence of different identities are “guarantees of public peace.”
