Russia’s leading publisher shuts queer-interest imprint amid intensifying anti-LGBTQI+ crackdown

Russia’s largest publisher has shut its queer-themed imprint months after staff were arrested on ‘extremism’ charges.

On January 13, 2026, Russia’s largest publishing house, Eksmo, announced the closure of its young-adult imprint Popcorn Books, known for inclusive and queer-themed literature. The decision comes months after authorities raided the publisher and arrested several staff members on charges of participating in an “extremist organization,” a move widely interpreted as part of the Kremlin’s ongoing campaign against LGBTQI+ visibility.

Popcorn Books, which had gained attention for titles exploring LGBTQI+ themes and young-adult life, confirmed its closure in a statement expressing gratitude to readers and concern for colleagues now under investigation. Eksmo clarified to Vedomosti that the imprint had become “associated with a broader context than the publication of books,” a reference to increasing scrutiny under Russia’s anti-LGBTQI+ laws.

The crackdown traces back to the 2013 “gay propaganda” law, which banned positive portrayals of LGBTQI+ life for minors. In late 2023, Russia’s Supreme Court escalated restrictions, labeling the so-called “international LGBT movement” as an extremist organization, effectively criminalizing many forms of queer advocacy and public expression.

Legal pressure intensified in 2025 when three senior managers from Popcorn Books and Eksmo’s Individuum imprint were placed under house arrest as part of an investigation into “extremist” activities.

Experts say the government’s anti-LGBTQI+ policies serve multiple purposes. By targeting LGBTQI+ individuals and organizations, the Kremlin reinforces a conservative ideology, presents itself as a defender of “traditional values,” and diverts public attention from economic and political pressures. The closure of Popcorn Books highlights the chilling effect these policies have on cultural expression and freedom of speech in Russia.
