The Istanbul Police monitored accounts posting about LGBTI+ rights via "virtual patrols"

A decision has been obtained to block access to the X and Instagram accounts of associations and platforms that share content regarding LGBTI+ rights. The decision cites the Istanbul Police Department's "virtual patrol" activities and investigations aimed at "protecting the family and children" as grounds for the move.

According to the ruling, the request to block access was prepared within the scope of "virtual patrol" activities conducted by the Istanbul Police Department's Cyber Crimes Division. The document stated that these operations were carried out "to implement preventive and protective measures regarding the indivisible integrity of the state with its territory and nation, the constitutional order, and public security; to ensure safety and public order; and to combat cybercrimes."

The decision was issued by the Istanbul 6th Criminal Judgeship of Peace. The ruling noted that various X and Instagram accounts had been examined as part of "efforts aimed at protecting families and children" in the online environment and on social media platforms. The judgeship ordered that access to the accounts in question be blocked and the content removed, citing allegations that they could "adversely affect public order, the family structure, the protection of children, and public morality."

The judgeship based its decision on Article 8/A of Law No. 5651 on the Regulation of Publications Made on the Internet and Combating Crimes Committed Through Such Publications. The ruling cited the provision within that article stating that "a decision shall be made to remove content and/or block access regarding publications made on the internet where there are sufficient grounds for suspicion that the content constitutes the following crimes."
