March 8 - We can't shut up
The feminist community in Azerbaijan has announced another march on the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8.
In 2021 and during the last two months of 2022, the reports of brutal murders of women, sexual violence against minors and early marriages have shaken the country's feminist and queer communities. Most of these cases are the result of inaction of the state, which is supposed to protect our rights.
In 2021, 72 women were reported killed in the media alone. 43% of women were killed by their husbands.
The number of domestic violence crimes registered in 2021 was 19% higher than the previous year (1499 crimes).
78.5% of victims of domestic violence are women.
The organisers of the March 8 - Can't Shut Up about the epidemic levels of hatred against women and LGBTI+s, numerous murders, violence, and rape have made several demands on Facebook:
"Effective measures must be taken to prevent violence and killings against women!
Crimes against women should be investigated legally and fairly and the perpetrators should be brought to justice!
Istanbul Convention to be adopted!
Remove all obstacles to women's networking, unification and struggle!
Equal rights for all, regardless of gender or sexual orientation!”
With these demands, the country's feminist community held the traditional "8 March - We can't shut up!" announced the march on March 8, 2022 at 15:00.
The march will start in front of McDonald's in Nizami Street, and end in front of the Khurshudbanu Natavan statue (intersection of Aziz Aliyev and M.A. Rasulzadeh streets). The march will be considered over when the statement is read.
The aim of the march is to draw attention to gender-based violence and murders. The main slogans:
"Hear the voices from the house, make arrests in time!"
"Don't reconcile, investigate!"
"Murders of women is political!"
The march is peaceful. Slogans, posters and other symbols that go beyond the purpose and content of the march should not be used.
Date: 8 March 2022
Time: 15: 00-16: 00
Venue: Nizami Street, in front of McDonald's (Torgovaya)
A letter of warning about the rally was submitted to the Baku City Executive Power.
