The Stonewall Riots
The Stonewall Riots of 1969 were a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. LGBTQ+ patrons, led by trans women of color, fought back against police brutality at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The riots lasted for several nights and sparked a wave of LGBTQ+ activism.
The First Pride Parade
In 1970, the first Pride parade was held in New York City. The parade was organized as a political march to demand equal rights for LGBTQ+s.
The AIDS Crisis
In the 1980s and 1990s, the LGBTQ+ community used Pride to draw attention to the AIDS crisis. Activists demanded better healthcare and more research funding to fight the epidemic.
Today Pride is an ongoing act of protest and resistance
