Trans woman can change her gender marker in Japan

In Japan, a court approved for the first time a trans woman to change her gender markers.

For the first time, Japan's High Court has allowed a trans woman to change her gender marker without surgery, having previously made a similar decision for a trans man in February.

The applicant became the first trans woman in Japan to be given the opportunity to legally change her gender marker on official documents without having to undergo mandatory surgery, The Advocate reported.

To legally change the gender marker on official documents, Japan has a law requiring trans people to have a diagnosis of gender identity disorder and undergo reproductive organ reassignment surgery.
